We’ve all been to amazing locations in the peak season where everything blooms and things are just perfect for a successful vacation. But how about making a change in travel plans to experience life when the climate reaches it’s extreme. That’s what Ottawa was all about. Canada is a playground in the winter, where the Rideau Canal freezes over and becomes one of the biggest skating rink in the world. Locals anticipate the oncoming but huge winter months, planning activities that go around it.
Ottawa is the capital of Canada and is one of the 4th largest cities in the country. Temperatures can go to double figures in the negative so warm clothing is something you can’t do without. If you are suited up, you have experiences that can really be rewarding. Take long walks and explore the Parliament building and many other heritage buildings in the vicinity. See the parks transform into charmingly lit zones by night, giving the city a glittering and warm atmosphere to hang out despite the fierce weather.
Ottawa’s love for skating can be seen in the many ice rinks that open up in the parks for casual skating and socializing. Warm zones to take refuge from time to time are easy with the Rideau Center, a busy shopping area and food court are approachable in the downtown area. And last but not least, don’t forget to try out beavertails, a favourite savory made out of dough and special ingredients to really get you nourished for the Winterlude.
